Games like this should not be made.
Seriously with the engine used for this they could have made a much more entertaining game. Demons from hell on Mars is old fashioned and worked, lets say in the late eighties, early nineties as a b-grade type of science fiction sub genre but now this type of thing is just rubbish.
Imagine the types of things they could have done with this engine and the setting on mars in the future. Visions of a James Cameron/ Ridley Scott type sci-fi enter my mind...
The setting is quite good with a very futuristic feel and good interaction with some of the contraptions on mars but the devil & hell tie-ins are what ruined this game for me I found it cheesy and completely over the top that demons from hell were on mars. If this had been a game with a subtle depiction of a slightly believable Alien race instead of demons I would have enjoyed the game much more.
I constantly felt as though the monsters would attack just as I was reloading or cycling through available weapons. You simply run out of ammo and must reload way too often and it takes too long to do so. I think that FPS designers must take notice of the most popular FPS games and really try to keep the core gameplay similar i.e.: reloading, changing weapons the same. This should be made as easy and as fast as possible, excluding Counterstrike’s grenade throwing system, projectiles should go exactly where you point the mouse regardless of the direction you are moving at the time of release.
Most of the time your weapons feel completely inferior & ineffective.
Overall its way too over the top for my tastes as with most video games in general. I hope that one day the game industry will take itself seriously and make a game that values believable situations and settings without the often ridiculous and elaborate ones that have plagued them since the beginning.

Not to be mean or anything, but it is Doom after all. Although I do agree with some of your post (ie, the reloading thing, hate that). Most of it is just the general way Doom plays out. Or at least from what I remember from the older ones.

How old are you? Did you ever play doom1/2? I agree doom3 wasn't as entertaining as I hoped it would be but without demons it just wouldn't be doom.

Doom 3 was lame. Resurrection of Evil was 10 times better. (Much more ammunition, too)

It's just a mindless shooter, no more no less. Now if someone would take that engine and make an Aliens based game (mod) now that would rule. God knows it would be the perfect engine for it. And you wouldnt even have to change much. Throw a couple of marines in there and some aliens and your all set.

I am 26.
All im saying is that I think Doom is an old idea that doesent cut it anymore.
With such a nice futuristic haman colony on mars its a shame they had to go a ruin it by being faithful to the original

It's a sequel to DooM, wait for someone to get the engine and make something else. And games like Painkiller and Serious Sam do cut it. We need more of their kind, getting tired of semi realistic shooters. I'm not saying stop making them, just do some from all kinds and we'll be happy

I don't think they "ruined" it at all, I am very pleased with the sequel. I know that good sales figures don't always mean a game is great or even good, but it certainly indicates that a large proportion of players wanted to play it. One could conclude that it "cuts" it, so to speak.
Far Cry is the cheesiest game on the planet but I love it! It's about how they use it. I didn't find Doom 3 cheesy at all and really enjoyed the demonic theme.

I liked Doom 3 + RoE, Far Cry, and Half-Life 2 equally... Doom 3 was the perfect game for an ambience of horror, it was a totally new type of game for me that introduced me to the survival horror genre. Although it did become a bit repetitive, i do not regret playing it at all.

The game wasn't that bad, but maybe I liked it partially because it was a retelling of the original Doom. I agree that a lot of games have bad stories, but the problem is, the gaming industry is run by programmers. The guys making games, by and large, are programmers, and even when they bring in a writer, it's the programmers calling the shots. I consider it to be a major problem with the current structure of the gaming industry. It would be like having the special effects guys writing the movie script...oh wait, that's George Lucas.

Meh, say something we haven't heard 100 times before. Some people love Doom 3, some people love to hate it. People can argued up and down both ways for eternity, so don't waste your time.
For what it's worth, I liked the game. My only major gripe is the weapons, which did feel way too weak in terms of sound and feedback.

my argument is not just black & white. Its about gaming in general.
please link us to one of the 100 comments youve heard that talks about the same issues im raising?

Exactly.
SS2 & HL2 are about the only 2 serious Sci-fi's on PC
I prefer System Shocks futuristic environments over Half life 2's, obviously HL2 has better graphics engine but the gameworld is almost retro future and I hate that..
Its a shame that there arent more of those kinds of games available. I would have thought that video games were the perfect medium for science fiction.

Not enough games have good plots and script. It's because the developers are numbskulls like carmack who know how to code but don't know the first thing about direction or plots so all you end up with is a big ****ing tech demo.

Why would they.
They have their own engines, and half of their firm is based on engine design, as can be seen in Fear

There are very few things that this and the other dooms have in common.
Primarily the name, the weapons, and the monsters.
The gameplay and level design are by no means like any of the old dooms.
When it ceases to play like an old doom game, then it ceases to be doom.
As Shakespeare once said, what is in a name, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.
Likewise, this game by any other name would still not be Doom, despite it being called that, because its not as sweet as the old ones.

I wonder how long we have to wait before we start seeing decent scripts and plots in video games?
Halo 2's sales record is certainly encouraging.

What did you expect from a sequel to a decade old game? If you don't like doom and games like doom than why did you play doom3? Save yourself the trouble and play something else.
